South American Cruise - Belem and the Emilio Goeldi Museum Park
minerva II tim in cabin Thar she blows, shipmates!
Belem at sunrise. The capital of the state of Para, Belem was founded in 1616 and doesn't look much like 'the city of mango trees' now.
Minerva anchors in the Amazon mouth and ferries us ashore in her own launches.
We pull into the oldest part of the city. To the left you can see the famous Ver-O-Peso market and to the right the 'neo-classical' cathedral.
After a quick drive across the city...
...the first stop is the Emilio Goeldi Museum - a natural history research centre which is a bit like an Amazonian national park. Chock full of colour and wildlife.
It must be pretty tiring being a frog here...
...though I think the 3-toed sloth has got it about right. Why move around unless you have to?
Soak up the sun baby, then maybe go for a little dip. Hmm..perhaps this is my natural habitat?
The only thing on the move where the damn ants...now where did I see that insectivore?
